Concrete is a furniture set consisting of one table and four stools. Made entirely from recycled and recyclable plastic waste, Concrete is designed to effortlessly fit in yet still bring personality into the modern Vietnamese home. The classic, timeless form factor, inspired by 20th century Modernist architecture in Southern Vietnam, combined with recycled plastic waste, strikes a unique balance between the past, present and future of Vietnamese urban life. Concrete is crafted using conventional woodworking techniques that only require structural reinforcement from wooden pins and fasteners. Therefore, it can be disassembled and recycled back into boards after use.
The heavy weight and thickness of recycled plastic boards come from locally collected plastic waste, which, after being processed, gives the impression of concrete. Concrete was also a widely-used building material for Modernist structures in Southern Vietnam in the 20th century.
The design's uniform thickness communicates solidity, stability and durability while at the same time satisfying the material's structural strength, as in order to be able to use one single material for the design, careful calculations and a balance between form and function must be achieved.
While its subtlety and straightforwardness accommodate the modern, minimal lifestyle, the furniture's clean architectural outlines and proportions quietly nod to the 70s' Vietnamese Modernist aesthetics, amplifying depth through playing with shadows, revealing details as lighting and perspective change.
Concrete was longlisted by Dezeen Awards 2022 for Sustainable Design, along with 74 other designs, out of over 5000 projects from 90 countries
Concrete was initiated by DCSG design and is now ready for full commercialization. Due to the fact that DCSG has been working with independent makers, currently, each piece of the furniture set is made to order.
